Why South End

Your squash game, without the drive

South End's two courts are the only squash courts in the South Bay. They are air-conditioned and professional-grade, so a hard game does not depend on the weather.

Members book an hour at a time, up to a day ahead from 6 AM, in the club app, by phone or at the front desk. The front desk also books walk-ins when a court is open. When you are done, the sauna, pool and dining are a few steps away.

Research

What published studies actually measured

Racquet sports, measured together. A British Journal of Sports Medicine study followed 80,306 adults in England and Scotland (Oja and colleagues, 2016). People who played racquet sports had a 47 percent lower risk of death from any cause, and a 56 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, than people who did not. The study grouped badminton, tennis and squash as one activity, so this is an association in that group. It is not a squash-only result, and it is not a guarantee.

Squash, measured on its own. A 1987 study in The Physician and Sportsmedicine recorded 32 men playing recreational squash (Montpetit, Beauchamp and Léger). Play averaged about 661 calories an hour, at 57 percent of maximal oxygen uptake. The authors called about 30 minutes of that play a solid fitness session.

The South Bay. No published study counts squash players here. What this area does have is at South End: the only squash courts in the South Bay, and a member community of 50-plus active players.
